Who Can Benefit from Psychotherapy?

The first rule of holes: When you're in one, stop digging.

People come to me for many reasons.  Some are in unhappy marriages or find it difficult to form or hold onto loving relationships.  Some have children who are spinning out of control.  Others say they have little joy or passion in their lives or face the day feeling anxious, angry, guilty or mistreated.

For many the pain of coping with addictive or com-pulsive patterns, ill health, the loss of a loved one or a creative impasse leads them to look for new ways of approaching problems.  Some are contending with early painful or traumatic experiences that continue to interfere with living productive and happy lives.

Perhaps you aren’t comfortable talking about personal issues.  Maybe you’re skeptical that talking can do any good.  Or you’ve tried and found that words and insight haven’t really changed anything. More than talk goes on in therapy, which leads to the next question:  What does go on?  What should you expect?
